History in Fiction
Teacher: Alison Brown Age: 12-18 yrs old Length: Full Year
History shows up in more than just historical fiction. Your idea of the Middle Ages in Europe is probably based on various fantasy stories, and even science fiction is built on the storyteller’s guesses about how events in the past may recur in the future.
But most authors and screenwriters are not historians. Their own ideas about history may be vague, unreliable, or even dangerously wrong. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter (though it’s still fun to know the truth). But sometimes, the way history is portrayed in popular culture affects the way we think about the present.
In this class, we’ll watch or read small clips from various popular movies, books, and video games. We’ll figure out which historical ideas the creators are putting forward, assess how accurate they are, and discuss whether it matters.
You’ll learn some history, some research skills, and some literary analysis techniques. But most importantly, you’ll practice the skills you need to fact-check ideas you hear floating around and ways to identify bits of misinformation. The creators of your fiction aren’t trying to mislead you, but their stories may do it anyway; learning to recognize how it’s happening will let you do the same thing with information you find on the internet, which may or may not be trying to mislead you on purpose.
Moving Worlds: People, Culture & Migration
Teacher: Karla Freeman Age: 12-18 yrs old Length: 2nd Semester
In this class we will step into real-life stories of courage, change, and new beginnings. In this engaging class, we’ll explore what it means to move from one place to another.
Through interactive activities, discussions, and powerful storytelling, you’ll discover:
- The difference between immigration, migration, and asylum
- Why people leave their countries—whether for opportunity, family, or safety
- How countries respond to newcomers and how communities can support them
We will walk in someone else’s shoes through stories, and reflect on fairness, empathy, and human rights. Along the way, we’ll connect these global stories to our own communities and experiences. Each student will design and create their own museum exhibit.
This class will be great for thoughtful, curious teens ready to explore big questions about belonging, identity, and what it means to find a place to call home.
Creative Writing: The 12 Steps of the Hero's Journey

Along the way, we’ll explore well-known tales, break down what makes them so powerful, and uncover the patterns behind unforgettable characters and plots. Then, it’s your turn: students will craft their own original stories, developing heroes, villains, and entire worlds using the Hero’s Journey as their guide.
Whether you love fantasy, action, mystery, or real-life-inspired stories, this class will help you unlock your creativity, build confidence as a writer, and have fun bringing your imagination to life. Adventure awaits—are you ready to answer the call?
Writing in Community: Exploring Fanfiction
Teacher: Alison Brown Age: 12-18 yrs old Length: Full Year
Whether it’s science essays or fanfics, reading and writing make you part of a community. But to feel a sense of belonging in that community, it’s important to understand the etiquette and how to participate effectively.
In this class, we’ll practice the skills of giving and receiving feedback on all parts of the writing process: generating ideas, outlining, writing, editing, and publishing. We’ll talk about what kinds of comments are polite to give in different settings, how to give writers the kind of feedback they really want, and how you can ask for critique on your own work that will actually help you. And we’ll find the underlying similarities between different types of writing, so that you can give feedback even on subjects you’ve never been into.
We’ll be more heavily focused on editing than writing; you can participate whether or not you’re a writer. If you write something at home, you can bring it; if you read something interesting, you can bring that. Either way, we’ll practice feedback skills and discuss communication concepts that apply to writing in any subject, fiction or nonfiction.
