Foreign Language Classes

American Sign Language I

Class Description:

A beginning level American Sign Language (ASL) course using everyday conversations to teach ASL vocabulary, grammar and structure; as well as key points regarding Deaf Culture, covering Lessons 1 - 6.

  • The course will include a Deaf Culture Experience assignment in which students will attend 1 Deaf Culture event and write a one-page response relating what was seen/heard, experienced, and feelings about the experience.

Class Size: 5 student minimum,14 student maximum

Tuition: $170 per semester (this does NOT include the textbook)

Textbook: Student purchases textbook. Used for ASL 1 & 2. Title: Learning American Sign Language, Levels 1 & 2, Beginning & Intermediate,  2nd  edition; Tom Humphries & Carol Padden, ISBN-10: 0205275532 or ISBN-13: 9780205275533. Available new for $90-$100, or used for $30 - $80. (Shop early, the price of used books tends to go up closer to Fall.)

  • Optional Supplemental DVD: Learning American Sign Language DVD by Tom Humphries, ISBN: 9780205453429.
  • Access to internet is helpful but not required for students.

Supplies:  Copies of weekly practice log. Original log will be provided.

Prerequisite:  None

Homework:  Yes. Two hours of practice weekly, preferably with a class mate; practice log to be turned in weekly, and one Deaf Culture Experience (outside of class) and a one-page paper regarding the student’s experience.

Required:  Internet access helpful for accessing on-line ASL dictionaries and other ASL programs.


American Sign Language II

Class Description:

An intermediate level American Sign Language (ASL) course using everyday conversations to teach ASL vocabulary, grammar and structure, as well as key points regarding Deaf Culture; covering Lessons 13 – 18.

  • The course will include two (2) Deaf Culture Experience assignments in which students will attend 2 Deaf Culture events, at two different times, and write a one-page response for each event, relating what was seen/heard, experienced, and feelings about the experience. The first assignment will be due mid way through the semester and the second will be due at the end of the semester.

Middle School Spanish

Class Description:

Students will learn basic conversation skills, pronunciation, greetings, introductions, classroom directions, numbers, alphabet, telling time, days of the week, months, weather and seasons through being immersed in a Spanish environment and engaging in fun, 5th – 7th grade activities (songs, dance, cooking, arts and various activities) that are designed to help students develop a knowledge and appreciation of Latino/Hispanic culture.

Prerequisite: None

High School Spanish I

Class Description:

Students will learn Spanish through connections with other subjects such as music, literature, math, history, health, art, social sciences, geography, and technology. Students will examine Latino/Hispanic culture and explore perspectives of Spanish speakers in regards to family, friends/friendship, sports/athletics, community service, food, social events and festivities, traveling and computer technology.

This class involves learning Spanish grammar such as definite and indefinite articles, word order and placement, plurals of adjectives, subject pronouns and conjugation of present tense verbs. Songs, dance, cooking, arts and crafts, and other activities appropriate for 7th -12th students are incorporated into the class.

Each year the class goes to a special field trip “Mercado central”.

High School Spanish II

Class Description:

A continuation of Spanish I, this involves a further study of Spanish grammar such as using comparisons, demonstrative adjectives, direct and indirect object pronouns, commands, present progressive and past tense verb conjugations. Songs, dance, cooking, arts and crafts and other activities appropriate for 8th -12th students are incorporated into the class. The last Wednesday of each month we have a cultural day where the students experience culture by trying and cooking Latino food.

Each year the class goes to a special field trip “Mercado central”.

Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or equivalent or tutor approval

High School Spanish III w/ a CLEP option

Class Description:

Spanish III is a year long course at the advanced level.  Using classroom instruction and reinforcing activities, the student will increase proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  The student will also study the culture and customs of the Spanish-speaking world.  This class will be taught at a fast pace; it is imperative that the students remain focused, and study daily in order to achieve the expectations of the class.  The course will be taught primarily in Spanish.

Prerequisite: High School Spanish I and II

CLEP option:

Description: For those students that want to take the CLEP test we will meet 4 weeks later after the finalization of West. We will concentrate for 4 weeks in prepared the students for their final CLEP test. I will provide your student a guide for the test as also prepared your student my goal is that your student will get a great credit score.
