How Redwoods Classes Work
Redwoods Homeschool Community is a resource, NOT a school, for homeschooling families. We offer enrichment, elective, and core academic classes taught by trusted instructors to supplement your home education. Our goal is to come alongside homeschooling families and provide both academic support and meaningful connection for students and parents.
Our Instructors:
Every class is taught by a paid instructor who is passionate and skilled in their subject area. All instructors:
- Agree to our Statement of Faith
- Have passed a background check
- Have completed Ministry Safe training
Class sizes:
We aim to keep class sizes small to foster quality instruction and meaningful relationships.
- Most classes: 10–12 students
- Physical Education: up to 16 students
Class times:
Classes are 50 minutes, unless otherwise specified.
Schedule:
9:30-10:20
10:30-11:20
11:30-12:20
12:30-1:30
1:30-2:20
2:30-3:20
Class categories:
Enrichment
Hands-on, creative, and fun! These laid-back classes are typically offered to elementary students and do not include homework.
Examples: cooking, STEM, gardening, Little Inventors, card making, American Girl history, Passport to the World geography
Elective
Classes may require specialized materials and knowledge. Classes can be hands on, activity based, or academic. May have homework.
Examples: music, drama, art, physical education, science experiments, foreign language conversation
Core
These are academic courses typically offered to middle and high school students (starting in 8th grade). Homework is required, and grading is provided.
- Approx. 1.5–3 hours/week
- A syllabus will be provided to support pacing and expectations
Examples: Biology, Chemistry, Worldviews, Composition, Foreign Language
Orientation:
We ask that all families attend Classes Orientation which takes place the week before Classes start. It is an important time to review expectations, share updates and changes, and connect in fellowship with other families.
Parent Expectations:
Redwoods Classes is not a drop-off program. Parents must remain on site during class time.
There is no volunteer requirement (as in Co-op), but we love and encourage parent involvement!
- You’re welcome to bring a book, craft, or work
- Enjoy time in our lounge and connect with other parents
- Coffee & tea available
- We aim to offer casual parent “small groups” like Bible study, book club, or skill-sharing during class hours—led by and for parents, to fill your cup!
Students:
We ask students to:
- Arrive on time
- Participate respectfully
- Complete homework assignments if enrolled in Elective or Core classes
Homework expectations:
- Elective: 30 minutes to 1 hour/week
- Core: 1.5 to 3 hours/week
Siblings not in Class:
We offer a relaxed study hall/lounge area for children (and their parents) not in class. Kids may bring:
- Schoolwork
- Crafts
- Books
- Board games
We also have:
- Nursery rooms (ages 5 and under, with parent supervision)
- Playground (ages 6 and under, with parent supervision)
- Lawn space (with parent supervision)
Note: We do not provide childcare.
Feedback:
At Redwoods, we’re committed to offering high-quality classes and a positive experience for both students and families. We value open communication and would love to hear how things are going!
Throughout the semester, you can connect with our leaders and instructors in person or through Slack, or email us anytime at info@redwoodshcc.org.
Near the end of each semester, we’ll also send out a formal feedback form to help us continue improving and serving our community well.
Devices:
We ask that students do not bring or use personal devices during Redwoods programs. We want this to be a time to connect in real life.
Exception: Students working on schoolwork during a free period may use a device only under parent supervision.
A Homeschool Resource Center in Progress:
Redwoods is not a school, we’re a resource and community for homeschooling families. Our classes are meant to supplement the education you’re providing at home, not replace it.
We’re currently in the process of establishing a dedicated Homeschool Resource Center, a welcoming home base for Redwoods families to connect and engage!
