Description
This club is for students in 8th grade or above who are wanting to explore problem solving methods and/or have fun discussing math concepts in a group. Meetings are instructor-led and will consist of exploration of a math concept and a discussion on the topic, followed by practice of the concept both with club members and individually. The focus of the Fall Math Club will be Counting and Probability. Topics covered will include fast counting methods, list making, casework, permutations, combinations, probability, and much more.
Dates & Time
This is a semester-long course. It will meet on the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month at 3 pm CST.
- Fall, Sept 11 - Dec 11
- Spring, Jan 22 - May 14
Structure
All links and club information will be hosted in a Canvas classroom. Club meetings will be held twice monthly on Zoom, each lasting an hour. Students will be given any links that they may need in the Canvas classroom and via the chat on Zoom during the meeting. These links may include, but are not limited to, BitPaper, PolyPad, Desmos, and GeoGebra.
Expectations
Club members are expected to attend club meetings regularly, be attentive, and contribute to each meeting’s discussions. We understand that students may need to miss a meeting due to special circumstances, but if signing up, please expect to attend all meetings. Contributions include playing a game, exploring an idea, and trying to do the math problems presented. (Optional practice problems will be provided to do between club meetings. Members are not required to do these.)
Materials required
Students will need a device to access the Canvas classroom, as well as a device with a camera to attend meetings that has the Zoom app available on it. Information about the Canvas classroom will be provided over the summer of 2025.
