Layne Hancock is a dedicated educator, business owner, and driving instructor based in Portsmouth, Virginia, with deep roots in the community. A product of Portsmouth public schools, Layne graduated from Churchland High School before pursuing higher education at Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University, where he focused on science and earned various accreditations, including driver education.  

With a diverse career that began as a funeral director at a local family-owned funeral home, Layne later transitioned to the transportation department with Chesapeake Public Schools. He then took on a teaching role at a local private school before moving into his current role as owner of Hancock Driving School, further solidifying his commitment to guiding young minds.  

In 1998, Layne’s parents founded Hancock Driving School, and he has been involved with the family business since its inception. With over 25 years of experience in driver education, Layne has excelled in both classroom instruction and hands-on driving lessons. In 2023, he took the reins of the driving school upon his parents' retirement, becoming the owner/operator and fully committing to its operations.  

Layne is passionate about ensuring that all students—whether teenagers or adults—are thoroughly prepared for their driving journeys.  

As a professional in the field, Layne is committed to staying updated on the latest laws and regulations from the National Board of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. He is licensed through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to teach various courses, including on road Behind the Wheel, Virginia's Driver's Manual 30 Hr. course, Virginia 8 Hr. Driver Improvement, and the Virginia Learner's Permit re-examination course.  

Layne Hancock is not just an instructor but a mentor who strives to make a positive impact on his students’ lives, preparing them for safe and responsible driving.
