INTRODUCTION

Resurrection Homeschool Theater is the new name for a program that has been in operation for three years, working with talented young performers in the Rocky Mount homeschool community. The primary goal of this program is to provide a Christ-centered environment that allows such students to be involved in theater and theatrical production. In addition, we want to allow students and audiences to experience works of classic literature, bringing such works to life through original adaptations.

BENEFITS OF THE CLASS

Theater class compliments and enhances your core curriculum by developing many valuable skills, including:

  • Creativity and imagination

  • Artistic expression

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Physical coordination

  • Speaking and storytelling skills

  • Confidence on stage

  • Teamwork

  • Problem solving and thinking on your feet

  • Following through on a big goal

  • Discipline and memorization skills

Depending on the student’s role in the play, this class may include enough work to count as an elective credit for high school.

CLASS & PERFORMANCE DETAILS

This year’s production:

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

  • Classes on Wednesdays, 1-2 PM.

  • Occasional extra or longer practices (primarily dress rehearsals), dates TBD.

  • Performances next spring on March 20, 21, and 22.

What is included?

  • Tuition includes 40 hours of in-person instruction (including rehearsals and performance).

  • All participants will receive a role in the play. All who desire a speaking role will be given at least a line or two.

  • No supply fee. All sets, props, and general class supplies will be covered.

  • Exception: Costumes are NOT included in tuition and will be considered the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Students will be given a list of costume pieces for which they will be responsible—essential clothing items such as a shirt and pants, a dress, shoes, etc. These can be bought, borrowed, thrifted, or handmade at the discretion of the parent (with approval by the director) and will be kept by the student after performance. Costume accessories that are more specialized—such as crowns, capes, fairy wings, masks, wigs, etc.—WILL be covered by the cost of tuition

  • Families will receive 2 free tickets per show.

What is expected?

  • Students will be expected to attend classes / rehearsals as often as possible, with limited excuses.

  • Students will be expected to rehearse their lines and complete small assignments at home, roughly 1-3 hrs of work per week. (Assignment examples include vocal exercises, writing a character description, creating costume ideas, etc.)

  • Line memorization is required and expected well in advance of the performance dates. (Scripts are usually not allowed on stage around 6-8 weeks before performance.)

  • Parents will be expected to keep track of class communications and respond in a timely manner when necessary.

  • Parents will be expected to provide costumes as mentioned above. If a parent is unable or unwilling to find a suitable costume, one can be provided at additional cost.

  • Parents will be expected to volunteer a minimal amount of time to help in some area of the production (e.g., making a few props or costume pieces, painting sets, helping with lighting at performances, or helping with refreshments / hospitality).

Looking forward to letting our kids shine on the stage!
