Footsteps Through Time ~ Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

Come explore early San Diego.  

Students will gain an understanding of the early history of California from before the Spanish arrival in the mid-1700s, through the Mexican period of the early 1800s, into the Mexican-American War, through the Gold Rush, and finally into the early American frontier town that would eventually become the San Diego of today.

Their approach to teaching history is based on the concepts of participation and interaction with our docents, historic buildings and artifacts to give students a hands-on, first- person appreciation for the people, events, and material culture of the past. 

Receive an overview of California History (1760s–1870s) from our knowledgable docents, and meet a blacksmith, a schoolteacher, or the pressman for all the latest news!

Included in the  Tour:

  •  A docent-led tour of the park & its museums
  • Entertaining & informative presentations by costumed interpreters
  • Overview of early San Diego & California
  • Lunch break on the historic plaza (bring you own lunches)
  •  1–2 Hands-on History Activities

Examples of activities include:

Doll making

Leather tooling

Basket weaving

Who: 4th grade and up

Cost: $11.50 per student, $7.50 per adult
