Teacher Policies

Teacher Policies

Volunteer teachers are the heart of Excelsior! Co-op and we humbly acknowledge the sacrifice and weight of responsibility that our teachers bear. The following policies are designed to guard and protect our volunteers and students.

  • All teachers and assistants (as part of Co-op registration) are required to sign a Statement of Faith.
  • Teachers are expected to teach from a biblical worldview and in accordance with the Statement of Faith.
  • Teachers must pass a background check (see below).
  • Teachers must attend Excelsior! Co-op for one school year prior to teaching.
  • No more than two classes may be taught during each session.
  • Members who desire to teach should submit a Class Application form prior to the next session.
  • After classes are approved, class descriptions (from the Class Application) will be posted on the website prior to the next session. Class descriptions should include a list of textbooks, supplies, or material supply fees (subject to approval) that are required of each student.
  • Teachers are welcome to use any supplies furnished by the Co-op in each classroom. Additional supplies may be found in the supply closet. We prefer the use of furnished supplies rather than supply fees or the reimbursement of expenses.
  • Material Supply Fees for your class are an expense over and above the regular Excelsior! registration and term fees. The Co-op will NOT add the amount of Material Supply Fees to the appropriate families' accounts; collection of the fees is the responsibility of the teacher. Anticipated fees must be submitted on your Class Application form and be pre-approved.
  • To be reimbursed for personal expenses, the expense must be listed in your Class Application form. Reimbursements are subject to prior approval.
  • Each teacher will receive at least one adult non-relative assistant teacher, and possibly additional classroom helper(s) dependent upon class size. Teachers are encouraged to rely upon the assistants and helpers, who truly want to serve. Your assistant and helper(s) are not there to observe, but to be active in the classroom.
  • In the case of a teacher's absence, the assistant will substitute for the teacher. It is the teacher's responsibility to prepare the assistant with appropriate resources and lesson plans. In the event of an unplanned absence, the teacher should contact the assistant as soon as possible to alert of the necessary adjustments.
  • Any teacher or assistant teacher who will be absent is responsible to find another Co-op member who will assist in the class, to maintain at least two adults in the classroom at all times (or more if needed based on class size).
  • Each classroom must have at least two non-relative adults in the classroom at all times, otherwise the class session is immediately canceled.
  • Classroom content is at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers are free to pool from their own experiences, educational theories, and curricula, as long as the Lord is glorified in the classroom and all instruction is in keeping with the Statement of Faith and a biblical worldview. Classroom content is subject to final approval by the Co-op leadership.
  • At the end of the session/year, teachers may submit a hard copy of class syllabus, lesson plans, worksheets, etc. for Excelsior!'s files.

Assistant Teacher Policies

Excelsior! provides an assistant teacher in each classroom. Dependent upon the size of the classroom, additional helper(s) will be assigned. Assistants and helpers are very important to the classroom environment and are provided for several reasons: 1) for liability reasons, 2) to maintain the proper student/adult ratio, 3) to encourage our volunteer teachers with practical help, and 4) to provide teacher substitution in the case of teacher absence. Two adults are to be in each classroom at all times, otherwise the class is immediately canceled. Teachers, assistant teachers, and helpers are responsible to find a replacement if they are absent. Assistant teachers and helpers are not observers but active servants of the classroom.

  • All assistant teachers (as part of registration) are required to sign a Statement of Faith.
  • Assistant teachers are expected to teach from a biblical worldview and in accordance with the Statement of Faith.
  • Assistant teachers must pass a background check.

Student Teacher Policies

Co-op senior classmen who have been members for at least one year, who are interested in teaching a class are welcome to approach the director to discuss class ideas and goals. Excelsior! will provide an adult mentor and assistant teacher to encourage the development of the Student Teacher. Parents of Student Teachers are allowed to fill the role of assistant teacher or classroom helper provided there is always a second, non-relative adult in the classroom at all times.

Non-Member Teacher Policies

Occasionally non-members are contracted to teach a Co-op class. (This does not refer to Guest Speakers.) Non-member teachers are subject to the teacher requirements below. If an instructor fee is contracted, it will be appropriated among the class students as a Material Supply Fee.

  • All teachers are required to sign a Statement of Faith.
  • Teachers are expected to teach from a biblical worldview and in accordance with the Statement of Faith.
  • Teachers must pass a background check.

Background Checks

For the integrity and security of Excelsior! families, all Teachers and Assistant Teachers must submit to a background check. Excelsior! maintains a position of "full disclosure" -- allowing individuals to approach the director privately to discuss matters of importance regarding background checks. In the event that something unforeseen comes back the board will consider each person and each matter individually.
