Primary Class Information
PRIMARY CLASS DESCRIPTION PAGE
You must be a current HSA member to register for classes. Registration will open in June
Kindergarten
is a fun-filled, hands on, theme oriented class focused on science, history, holidays, and writing readiness skills. It is a contained classroom so the students will be in the same classroom and with the same teacher and assistant throughout the day.
Note: You may add your Pre-K student to the waitlist. Depending on Kindergarten registration we may open some Pre-K spots in August and families with older siblings already enrolled at HSA will have preference. If we do accept Pre-K it will be a combined Pre-K and Kindergarten classroom.
We will be working on pre-writing skills, gross & fine motor skills, communication skills, listening skills, etc. while having a fun day that includes experiments, crafts, games, snack time, reading, and group activities. We do not focus on teaching math, phonics, how to read, or penmanship. Each child comes to this class possessing a variety of skills and abilities. I will do my best to create an environment where your child thrives.
Enrollment Requirements/Expectations for Kindergarten students:
To register for this class, your child must be at least 4 1/2 years old when classes begin and can be up to 6 years old. In addition, your child:
- Must be fully potty trained
- Must be able to sustain attention for at least 15 minutes at a time
- Should be willing to be separated from their parents for a class day
- Should be willing to learn to cut, color neatly, and be able to use their fine motor skills
- Should be able to work independently for 5 minutes and wait for help
Our primary students are divided up by grades into group classes. We will have 4 Primary groups. Our divisions for the 2025-2026 classes will be based on registrations and the number of students per grade/age.
Primary students stay with their classmates throughout the day. Students will potentially have Science, History, Writing, Creative Arts, and Gym for the full year. Creative Arts could include music, art, and more.
All Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade students are full day students.
End of the day clubs are optional and are comprised of students from different grades.

About Primary Writing Classes
This class explores a variety of writing techniques through descriptive writing, stories,
poetry, reports, essays, and more! Selections from literature will demonstrate various
writing techniques. Writing is best developed through practice, as well as through topics
meaningful to students, therefore, students will learn to write in a variety of genres of
literary styles, often choosing their own topics within a given category.
Student participation: Students will be sharing some of their writing with partners or
the whole class. They will learn how to listen and be supportive of each other as they
work through a few team projects, or coach each other on writing techniques.
Sometimes, students will share fully finished pieces with the whole class! Students will
also have assignments to work on at home every week, so please check their writing
folder for these assignments and any related handouts.
NOTE: This class will focus on the writing process, different uses of writing, and a
variety of writing styles. We will NOT be learning spelling, grammar, or punctuation in
this class, although these mechanics will come up now and then. Please do spelling,
grammar and punctuation at home. Neither will we be spending a lot of time proof-
reading for these areas in class – we will be using class time to focus on voice, word choice, flow, transitions, and other aspects of writing. Nitpicking mechanics in pieces
that children have poured their hearts and souls into writing can sap the joy right out of
writing, and I want students to look forward to putting their thoughts onto paper, without
worrying about the mechanics of spelling and punctuation during their creation process.
Students will be given a few assignments in which they will complete a full proof-reading
and editing process, but, overall, they will be free to focus on expression through written language.
About Primary History
Welcome to the 2025-2026 Primary History Class! We will be studying World History: Ancient through Middle Ages at HSA this year!
We will be using The Story of the World, Volumes 1 and 2 as our core textbooks. As this is quite a bit of content to cover in one school year, I will provide a syllabus of which chapters we will be focusing on so that you can follow along with the reading at home.
Your student will learn through storytelling, projects, games, and activities! I will give each student a composition notebook to use as their History notebook. Each week your child should bring his or her notebook to class. We will add pictures and worksheets to the notebook so they can use it as a springboard to share what they've learned at HSA with you at home!
About Primary Science Classes
At HSA our elementary science rotates over a four year period with all of the grades (2nd-6th) using the same book so the family can study together. This year we will study The Human Body!
2025-2026 - Apologia Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology
On Tuesdays in HSA, we will be focusing on the hand's on experiments and lab notebook. At home, you will read the chapters and do the questions and additional projects, depending on grade level.
Supplies:
- 1 3-Ring Binder for Science (3/4"- 1" should be fine, nothing too large or heavy)
About Primary Art Classes
Students will draw, paint, cut, & paste their way through projects highlighting the seven Elements of Art.
An emphasis will be placed on trying new techniques and the joy that can be found in creating art. Proper use and care of materials will also be covered. Washable materials are generally used, but smocks are welcomed – old button-up shirts or aprons are the easiest to take on and off, but an oversized t–shirt will also work.
About Primary Gym
Each student will be encouraged to maximize their individual abilities and at the same time, develop a better awareness of the strengths of others as they work together as a team. The greatest goal is to have an exciting, fun-filled, and encouraging workout each time! Students will enjoy both the use of the gymnasium as well as outdoor play throughout the year.
