Additional Information

Note: A second trip has been scheduled with the Sanctuary for 5/29. Families will be added from the waitlist in the order of their signup.

Due to a last minute cancellation by a public school, Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary is offering their educational program which normally costs more than $1,100 per group to CFS Poway. We are opening this opportunity to any homeschooling families in San Diego to join us, so you may invite your friends or share this event. We are collecting a $5 fee per family which will be given to the Sanctuary as a donation to the San Diego Abududon Society.

Please be aware that any families participating in this field trip will be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging and giving permission for their families to be photographed and/or flimed for use by the Society. There may be a news crew fliming the event as well.

This field trip is mostly outdoors. So please dress accordingly with closed toe athletic shoes (no sandals, crocs, flip flips or dress shoes) as we will be walking on trails through the chaparral. Please wear long pants to protect your legs. Hats and sunscreen are recommened as well as bottled water. Please do not eat in the sanctuary except in the designated areas. You are welcome to bring your snacks and lunch to eat after the field trip at noon in the designated picnic areas. There are tables for your use.

Educational programs will be provided for the following groupings: pre-K to K, 1st to 3rd, 4th to 6th. You are welcome to bring older children who are welcome to tag along, observe and participate like the adults, but no specific programming will be provided. Younger children are welcome with your family, but you will need to provide supervision and attend to them as no specific programming will be provided for them. Students will rotate through the education center, the tracking station (animal tracks), and the birding and observation area. Binoculars are available for group use, but please bring your own if you can.

Please allow sufficient time to travel as the sanctuary is located to the east of Lakeside.

Cost: $5 per family (ADA accessible)

DEADLINE to sign up is this Monday, 5/25. Since this field trip is less than a week away, please pay via paypal upon checkout to confirm your signup. Unpaid signups will not be held and spaces will be given to the next family on the waiting list.

About the Sanctuary:

The 757-acre Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary, located near Lakeside, is owned and maintained by San Diego Audubon.  Its purpose is to preserve in as complete and natural a state as possible a prime area of coastal chaparral and riparian woodland.  It is available for hiking, guided walks, bird watching, passive research, and education.  Over 324 native plant species and 124 bird species have been recorded there, as well as numerous reptile and mammal species, including mule deer, bobcat, and raccoon.

The Sanctuary has completely recovered from the 2003 Cedar fire.  The flora and fauna are abundant and provide an excellent laboratory for studying the natural cycles of chaparral and riparian ecosystems.  This crown jewel of San Diego Audubon has over four miles of trails for you to explore.

An observation area, one-third of a mile from the parking lot attracts birds and small mammal species, which can be viewed from the shaded comfort of available picnic tables and benches.  Those with physical limitations may drive or be driven to this area.  There are picnic areas at the Nature Center and the observation area, self-contained toilets at the parking lot and observation area and a drinking fountain in the observation area.

Wildflowers are profuse in winter and spring.  Each spring, we look forward to a large variety of breeding birds, including bluebirds, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, flycatchers, towhees, wrens, goldfinches, phainopeplas, and many other songbirds.  Additionally, a wide variety of butterflies, mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife are also there for you to enjoy.
