Apologia Biology Lab and Discussion

Note for Spring: Please contact the instructor about the spring fee amount.

Description: Join us for a fun and challenging two semester class learning Biology, using a Creation point of view. We will spend a majority do our time in class performing hands-on labs and using the microscope, with a generous helping of discussion of the concepts along the way. We will include 4 dissections, and some laughter along the way for the squeamish!

I am a homeschool mom of 6, and in my younger days, received my BS in Biology from UCLA before going on to get a teaching credential. I taught in the public schools for 2 years before coming home to stay with my firstborn. He is now ready for Biology, and I am thrilled to combine my education and experience to teach him along with others at co-op. I have used Apologia all along the way, and love its  balance between young-earth Creationism and understanding what mainstream scientists believe as Evolutionists.

Prerequisite: It is helpful if the student has already taken or is currently taking Algebra.

Homework Requirements: The students are expected to read each module (chapter) and answer comprehension questions before coming to class each week. We will also learn how to prepare a lab write-up, and completing that prep work will be expected to participate in the labs. A prepared student is going to get the most out of our class, and will contribute more to the discussion. Learning as a group means we all pull our own weight. I will expect your high-schooler to give their best effort. In return, I will do the same! Homework should take about 1 hour a day. For students who prefer, there is an audio mp3 format available so they can listen instead of reading.

Parent Expectations: There is a test at the end of each module. These will be taken at home under the parent's direction. The answers are in the solutions book, Andre tests  are generally easy to grade. I am happy to discuss difficult questions in class, but testing and grading will be primarily the parent's job. This is helpful for you to stay "in the loop" and also as test taking practice. This is a skill high schoolers must master. Keep records, as you can combine their test results with my lab grades for a grade to use on their transcript if you wish.

Supplies: I will purchase all the lab supplies, and they are included in the fee. You will need to purchase the textbook, solutions book, a composition book, binder, and safety goggles. We will have at least 1 "edible lab" and we will divide up the grocery list for that, with each student bringing a contribution.

Cost: $75 for Fall Semester. Price for spring semester will be based on class size and the cost of additional supplies purchased by the instructor (not expected to be more than the cost for Fall)
