Curriculum: Summit Ministries' Understanding the Times High School Curriculum Textbook: See list under class description ISBN#:

This is a two-semester text and video-based course that will help students clearly understand the tenets of the Christian worldview and how it compares with other leading worldviews of our day:  Islam, Secular Humanism, Marxism, New Age, and Postmodernism.   The video lectures come from Summit Ministries’ Worldview Camp where dynamic, expert speakers address major issues of the day, like Postmodernism, Bioethics, Relativism, Abortion, Cults, Entertainment, Evil and Suffering, Leadership, and much more.  Taking this course in a group setting allows for young people to ask questions, discuss the issues, and practice articulating a Christian world view.

This course is designed for seniors in high school in order to prepare them for the onslaught of worldviews they will encounter in college and life after they graduate.  In the home school setting, 11th and 12th grades are appropriate, with the possibility of advanced 10th graders also participating. Adults are also welcome to take advantage of this course offering.

Parents are welcome to attend class.  The instructor would like one committed parent to attend regularly, giving minimal administrative help – attendance, passing out papers, white board assistance, etc.  Parents supporting the student at home with scheduling, studying for tests, and occasional discussions of material will be helpful.

This is a 10-credit course that requires students to work at home on non Co-op days.  For most units, students’ homework for 2 weeks will be reading text and answering questions.  The third week, they will 1) write a 500-word essay (about 2 typed pages) in which students articulate the truths they have learned and 2) study for the unit test.  Thus, parents should allow the time in the daily school schedule that the student normally needs for a 10-credit course.  Instructor gives the students an assignment plan to help break down each week’s assignment into daily portions.  Testing will occur in class at the end of each unit.

Instructor information:
Gloria Kilmer, a CFSP “alumni mom,” home schooled her children from Kindergarten through High School and graduated them in 2006 and 2009.  Knowing that well over half of Christian young people renounce their faith by the time they graduate from college, Gloria has the desire for Christian young adults to become trained “Warriors for the Kingdom” in this postmodern age.  She wants them to understand the reasoning behind their beliefs before they face the heat of battle.  She also wants them to understand where nonbelievers are coming from so they can engage in meaningful, persuasive, and yet caring conversations.  Gloria uses the excellent curriculum, Understanding the Times from Summit Ministries to achieve this goal.  She taught this course twice before and is offering it again for ’13 – ’14.  Gloria has equipped herself, taking courses like Christian Worldview, Apologetics, and a conference on Islam.  She looks forward to working with the group of students that will come together this school year to “understand the times” in which we live so “that no one takes [them] captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” Col. 2:8
