Assistant Responsibilities

Assistants are just as vital to the success of co-op as teachers. Every class must have at least one assistant, as two adults are required in every classroom.

Attendance & Substitutes

  • If you will be absent, you are responsible for finding a substitute for your session. Each class must always have two adults present.
  • After three unsuccessful attempts to secure a substitute, contact the Substitute Coordinator for assistance. Failure to do so will count as an unexcused absence.
  • Three unexcused absences in a semester will result in your family forfeiting its slot in co-op for the following semester.
  • When the teacher is absent, the assistant will step in to lead the class, and a substitute will assist. If additional help is needed, ask the Hall Monitor to locate a volunteer.

Classroom Support & Responsibilities

  • Assistants, teachers, and students are jointly responsible for cleaning the classroom at the end of each period and especially after last period, when tables must be returned.
    • Ensure the room is cleaner than when class began; Put away materials/toys.
    • Return tables and chairs to the original position.
    • Erase boards, take out trash, wipe tables, and sweep if needed.
  • Help conserve energy by turning off lights and closing outside doors when leaving.

Expectations for Assistants

  • Support the teacher by gathering supplies, helping with lessons, and assisting with classroom management.
  • Be an active participant in class and avoid side conversations/cell phone use.
  • Offer extra help to students who need it.
  • Keep track of time so students transition promptly to their next class.
  • Take attendance and manage restroom breaks, allowing the teacher to focus on instruction.
