Your shift starts at 10:30 AM.

The first shift ends at 10:45 AM.

First-period classes end at 10:30 AM.
Second-period classes are 10:35 AM–11:50 AM

The First shift can’t leave until they know that the Second shift has arrived.

Ask if there are any special situations or concerns for the day.

Confirm you know where the keys are located.

The door keys are generally kept on a hook on the corkboard at the Onsite Volunteer Station, but confirm they are there before the Second Onsite Volunteers leave.

Second Onsite Volunteers are responsible for ensuring the transfer of the keys to the Third Onsite Volunteers.

These are kept in a drawer in the Onsite Volunteer Station’s rolling cart, but you can also claim one from a departing Second Onsite Volunteer.

floor plan for Planet HomeschoolTake a walk through PHS every 20 to 30 minutes.

Onsite Volunteers should alternate between resting and chatting near the PHS Onsite Volunteer Station and walking through Planet Homeschool, inside and outside the building.

Your walk should cover:

The hallways from the east stairs to the south stairs.

Remind students if needed that we are not to use the east stairway, landing, or elevator — except to assist instructors bringing supplies into the Fellowship Hall.

The Fellowship Hall lobby may be used for quiet study. Remind students if needed that conversations in this lobby can be heard by and disturb the staff working upstairs.

The PHS Closet.

Students are permitted to make use of the PHS Closet and empty classrooms for quiet study or small group gatherings.

The Lounge.

The door to the Lounge must remain open at all times.

Remind students if needed that conversations in the south stairwell and entry foyer can be heard by and disturb the staff working upstairs.

Outside from the east parking lot to the west lawn.

Any students on the front (or north) lawn should be reminded that our lease does not allow them to make use of that area and be asked to relocate to the east, south, or west lawns.

Remind students of our co-op’s Community Expectations as needed.

A printed copy can be found in the PHS Policies binder.

If reminders are not sufficient, please use the Onsite Volunteer Shift Log to document the situation.

If you don’t know the names of the students involved, ask them or ask for help from other members present in identifying the students.

You can find the contact information of the students’ families in the Directory and call them for immediate assistance if needed.

Please do not post directly to any of our co-op’s forums about behavior concerns.

Offer assistance if needed

A collection of small bandages for minor cuts is kept in the rolling cart, as are a pair of scissors, tape, pens, whiteboard markers, and other sundries.

While distressed students may just need a sympathetic ear, do not hesitate to call a student’s family to inform them that their student is in need of assistance.

All injuries, illnesses, and calls to families should be recorded on the Onsite Volunteer Shift Log.

Greet any visitors.

Since you are likely to not know who is and isn’t a visitor, just plan on greeting everyone.

Introduce yourself as the PHS Onsite Volunteer, ask for a return introduction, and offer your assistance if needed.
